(EYE MOVEMENT DESENSITIZATION REPROCESSING)

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing Therapy (EMDR Therapy) is a structured, integrative psychotherapy approach in which emotional / physiological distress and negative beliefs related to past events are processed and resolved through eye movements or other forms of bilateral stimulation.

EMDR is currently offered by several of our counsellors!

What Does EMDR Do?

EMDR is an integrative, structured form of therapy that has been researched extensively and found effective in treatment for post traumatic stress. EMDR can be helpful with the following!

What is EMDR? What is EMDR Therapy All About?

  • Before we begin processing through EMDR, we start by looking at the current challenges you’re facing (ie. shame, fear, disturbing memories) and explore your life history including past traumas/overwhelming events and work together to develop a plan.

  • Prior to beginning EMDR, we will also work together to find ways to help you experience calm and cope with difficult emotions as they arise.

  • During EMDR therapy, relevant events/memories will be identified and processed; the therapist will direct shifts in focus while leading you in sets of eye movement or other stimulation such as tapping. During this process, new perspectives related to past evens and positive beliefs about yourself will arise and be reinforced.

  • Depending on your current challenges, goals and history, EMDR counselling may be used as a stand-alone therapy or be integrated into regular individual counselling sessions, which are less structured and use a variety of talk therapy based techniques, which can be extremely helpful in understanding and integrating changes or insight gained from EMDR into your life or understanding of yourself in the world.

Let’s face it… if you haven’t heard of EMDR before, this may all seem a bit weird and difficult to wrap your head around.

Note: length of EMDR therapy will vary depending on your goals and history.
